The Pineapple's Crown

Pineapple (Ananas comosus)

Pineapple (Ananas comosus)
Location: Kohala Coast, Big Island, Hawaii

This is the third in a series of posts documenting the growth of a pineapple on one of the plants in my garden . In November I posted a macro photo of the fruit when it was not much bigger than a pine cone.  In the second photo, the fruit looked well-formed, though still small, and it was beginning to grow a crown.

Pineapples mature slowly, but this one's recent growth spurt makes us hopeful that we may be able to pick it and enjoy the sweet fruit a bit earlier than we had expected.  Thanks in part to the abundant rain we have seen over the past few weeks, the pineapple has become plump, and as you can see, it now has a well-formed crown.

What a beauty. Almost a shame to pick it. I love fresh pineapple too. Will you be eating it?

Hi Becky - You bet we're going to eat it! And then we will plant the top -- the pretty crown -- and another one will grow for us.

I still can't get over those red leaves. Your specimen is so much prettier that any I have seen in the supermarket. Something to be said for "fresh off the vine"!

When I was last in Hawaii many years ago, my uncle who lived there showed me how to check the picked pineapples for when they would best be eaten. There is nothing like a ripe pineapple from Hawaii.

Thanks everyone. This pineapple is beginning to make us salivate every time we walk through the garden. Kathy and Barbara are both right: there is nothing like a fully ripe, freshly picked pineapple from Hawaii.

It really has matured. Next time I go to the market I'm going to try to remember to buy one and try this. Love the shot too.
