Zebra Dove (Geopelia striata)

Zebra Dove (Geopelia striata)
Location: Kohala Coast, Big Island, Hawaii

The Zebra Dove (Geopelia striata) is one of two species of dove that visit our garden daily.  The other is the Spotted Dove (Streptopelia chinensis).

The Zebra Dove was introduced in Hawaii from Asia in the 1920s.  They are very plentiful in our area.  In fact, large numbers of Zebra Doves literally mob our bird feeders at certain times of the day.

This dove is similar to the Mourning Doves that we have here in New England. Ours don't have the stripes, but the colors are the same. Do yours seem to be in pairs as ours are?

Hi Kathy - They do resemble Mourning Doves. They pair up, but not for life (as far as I know). We see a lot of mating behavior going on among these doves. Lots of cooing, and the males puff themselves out and tip their tails and bow to the ladies, so to speak.
