Mr. Cardinal found a sunflower seed

Male Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis)

Northern Cardinal - male (Cardinalis cardinalis)
Location: Kohala Coast, Big Island, Hawaii

This male Northern Cardinal visits our bird feeder several times each day.   Usually we put a mixture of seeds on the feeders.  The cardinals always choose sunflower seeds first, only eating other seeds when there are no more sunflower seeds left.

In case you missed them, here is another photo of this male cardinal, and one of his pretty mate.

I think the sunflower seeds are their preferred meals. Our Cardinal lands on the feeder and proceeds to knock all the seeds to the ground in search for the sunflowers.

The Dark Eyed Juncos are most appreciative of this action though as they scurry around under him to get their share.

It all works for them and I get a chuckle or two as the cardinal looks in the window, and he has all the little millet seeds stuck on his beak.
