Lone Kiawe tree near the ocean

Kiawe (Prosopis pallida)

Kiawe (Prosopis pallida)
Location: Kohala Coast, Big Island, Hawaii

The area around the Kaiholena Public Shoreline Access in the North Kohala district of Hawaii's Big Island is very dry.  Vegetation mostly consists of grasses, scrubby bushes and Kiawe trees.  This particular Kiawe tree (Prosopis pallida) stands like a lone sentinel at the base of the footpath that leads from the parking area to the shoreline.

I just read about this tree. As useful as it is, it can be dangerous if you step on a thorn. Lets hope this lone tree can provide many flowers for the Bees.

Hi Becky - We didn't see any bees around this particular kiawe tree, but there were plenty of small dead branchlets on the ground nearby - with the dreaded thorn!

Hi,
Great picture. I wanted to ask you if it is OK with you if I use your picture for my blog. As you mentioned the Kiawe is native from South America, from the coastline of Ecuador, Colombia and Peru I am from Ecuador, and my last name is "Taco" which is the quichua name for the Kiawe tree. Greetings,

Christian

This image of a tree growing in isolation in seemingly sandy / rocky soil conjures the depiction of the 'Tree of Life'
