Bottlebrush Tree (Callistemon sp.)
Location: Kohala Coast, Big Island, Hawaii
The Bottlebrush Tree (Callistemon sp.) in our garden is blooming. The common name comes from the flower's resemblance to a bottlebrush. The genus name, Callistemon, means "beautiful stamens." The clumps of 'bristles' on the bottlebrush flower actually are the stamens of individual blossoms -- so, each flower on this tree really is a cluster of small blossoms. Each of the 'bottlebrushes' is about two inches (5 cm) long. This is a macro image, so it appears somewhat magnified.

I've never seen this color of bottlebrush. The ones here, in California, are usually dark red.
Hi Jan - I've seen quite a few of those really dark red ones, too, but this one that we have comes out rosy red.

I never thought a plant would be named for its non-natural look-alike.
That said, the petals with their spiky appearance look as if they could be letahl Obviously, far from reality that impression-actually delicate!

Wow! The flora in Hawaii is just amazing. One day, I'll come and see it with my own eyes :o)
This was one of my mom's favorites. We had one in the yard when I was a kid and it's still there. I didn't realize how big those trees can get until I saw them at the Gardens.
