Female Saffron Finch (Sicalis flaveola)
Location: Kohala Coast, Big Island, Hawaii

Here is a photo of a female Saffron Finch.  She is less brilliantly colored than the male, but is still a very pretty little bird, I think.

UPDATE: Click here to see a photo of a male Saffron Finch.

I agree - she is just as beautiful as her mate!

Very pretty birds. The female is similar to our female Goldfinch, although they have some black on their wings..

@ Kathy - Not as flashy, but just as pretty. ;-}

@ Becky and Gary - I know the Goldfinch, and you are right. There is a resemblance.

I'm still waiting to catch my first colorfull bird. This is great. :-)

Hi 2Sweet - The bird photos you posted on your blog the other day were terrific -- and pretty colorful, too.

Great photo, love the detail, at least she has some colour, many female birds seem to be lumbered with varying shades of brown!

Hi Celeste - Thank you. You are so right. Many female birds only get to sport drab feathers. I've always imagined that's because it makes it easier to hide in their nests with their young.
