Gold Dust Day Gecko (Phelsuma laticauda laticauda)
Location: Kohala Coast, Big Island, Hawaii
This is the Gold Dust Day Gecko (Phelsuma laticauda laticauda) -- probably the most colorful lizard living in Hawaii. A couple of months ago I posted a macro image of a Gold Dust Day Gecko's face, so I thought it was time now for a 'full body' specimen shot. When you look at this photo, you will understand how these lizards got their common name, Gold Dust.

Hi Kathy -- You're right. These little guys can dart around really fast, but every once in awhile I can get one to stay still and pose for me. ;-}

I love geckos! I don't think I've ever stumbled across this variety in the wild though.
I'm pretty impressed with the lack of grain at 800 ISO, too ...
Hi Zarquon - That colorful lizard is native to Madagascar, but some were released here in Hawaii at one point, and now they have proliferated. We have quite a few in our garden.
Re relative lack of graininess at 800 ISO -- it's gotta be the glass. The Nikon 105mm macro lens can do amazing things. I had to go with a pretty wide aperture, because if I had flashed, the lizard would have immediately disappeared.

What a colorful little thing it is. The larger view really shows the detail. I still think it looks like it has a beaded body.
